A method and system have been developed to prevent or mitigate rear-end collisions involving motor vehicles. This approach utilizes a sensor system to detect an obstructing vehicle ahead that is either stationary or moving slowly. Once identified, the motor vehicle autonomously brakes to maintain a safe distance from the obstructing vehicle. This innovative method aims to enhance road safety by addressing both rear-end collisions and potential multiple vehicle collisions.
The sensor system plays a crucial role in this method by continuously monitoring the environment around the motor vehicle. It locates obstructing vehicles on a collision trajectory and assesses their speed, ensuring it is below a predetermined threshold. Additionally, the system tracks trailing vehicles approaching from behind, gathering essential data about their driving characteristics to anticipate potential collisions.
Upon detecting an obstructing vehicle, the automatic braking system engages to stop the motor vehicle at a predetermined safety distance. This distance is strategically chosen to allow ample space for potential impacts and to facilitate necessary safety measures. If a rear-end collision is anticipated based on the behavior of trailing vehicles, the control system initiates appropriate responses, such as activating hazard lights or adjusting the vehicle's position.
The method allows for dynamic adjustment of the safety distance based on various factors, including expected speeds of trailing vehicles, road conditions, and traffic flow. For instance, when halting on highways where higher speeds are common, a greater safety distance is maintained compared to urban areas with slower traffic. This adaptability enhances the effectiveness of the safety measures implemented.
This method can be integrated into various types of motor vehicles, including passenger cars, trucks, and electric vehicles. By leveraging advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and modern sensor technologies such as radar and cameras, the proposed solution aims to significantly reduce the likelihood of rear-end collisions and improve overall road safety for all users.
