An augmented reality (AR) translation system has been developed to enhance the user experience by providing real-time translations of objects in a user's environment. The system utilizes camera data to identify objects within the user's field of view and offers visual translations from a primary language to an additional language. In addition to visual translations, audible pronunciations of these translations can also be included, making it easier for users to learn and understand foreign languages in context.
The AR system allows users to interact with their environment through various input modalities. Users can tag objects for translation using touch, audio, or gesture inputs while they are viewing those objects. This tagging process enables the system to store identifiers of the objects and their corresponding translations, creating a personalized listing for each user based on their preferences and language learning goals.
Once objects are tagged, the system continuously monitors the user's environment. As the user moves, the AR system identifies tagged objects within the camera's field of view and displays their translations in real-time. This feature allows users to see translated identifiers overlaid on their live view, facilitating easier recognition and association between the object and its translation without requiring them to divert their attention away from their surroundings.
Traditional language learning applications often require users to look away from real-world objects to input identifiers for translation, which can lead to inefficiencies and potential errors. The augmented reality translation system addresses these issues by integrating translation capabilities directly into the user's visual experience. This seamless interaction reduces cognitive load and enhances learning by allowing users to engage with their environment while simultaneously receiving language support.
The AR system is designed to be implemented in head-worn devices equipped with transparent displays, such as smart glasses. These devices include components like cameras for capturing real-time images, processors for translating data, and user interfaces for displaying augmented content. The integration of these elements allows for an immersive experience where users can interact with both virtual translations and their physical surroundings effectively.
