Flexible display devices consist of a flexible display unit made up of segments that can transition between a compact state and an expanded state. The compact state resembles the size of a typical handheld phone, while the expanded state is similar to a larger phone or tablet. A modular rigid display can be attached to this flexible unit, allowing for simultaneous use of both displays when unfolded.
Recent advancements in electronics have improved the performance of handheld computing devices, making them more efficient and user-friendly. However, small-scale touch screens can be cumbersome for tasks such as text input and video viewing. The need for larger displays without sacrificing portability has led to the development of foldable devices that maintain the functionality of a phone while offering a more expansive viewing area.
The flexible display devices aim to overcome limitations associated with rigid displays by introducing modularity and a connection interface between flexible and rigid displays. This design allows for various configurations, enabling users to utilize the flexible display independently or in combination with the rigid module, enhancing adaptability for different use cases.
The foldable device features multiple configurations, including a third state where the rigid display aligns with the flexible display for dual use. Integrated speakers and microphones are included in all folded states, along with sensors for configuration detection and mechanisms for alignment and support. A processing module may be included within either display segment to handle computing tasks in any configuration.
The connection between the flexible and rigid displays utilizes a sliding channel interface and connector, which allows secure attachment and detachment. A locking mechanism ensures stability when connected, while magnets enhance connection strength. The design offers flexibility in how displays can interact, ensuring users can easily switch between configurations as needed.
