A wearable augmented reality system designed for fitness training incorporates a virtual avatar that appears in the user's field of vision. This avatar serves as a virtual running partner, aiding the wearer in maintaining a controllable pace during workouts. By simulating competition with this avatar, users can better gauge their performance and improve over time.
The system consists of various components, including a processor connected to an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a global positioning system (GPS). An optical engine is also integrated, which works with an optical system featuring at least one Fresnel reflector. This setup allows for the creation of a three-dimensional avatar that the user perceives at a specific position in their visual field.
The wearable device processes data from sensors to adjust the avatar's perceived position dynamically. Users can modify factors such as the avatar's speed or the distance of their run, tailoring their training experience. Additionally, audio elements can enhance workouts by simulating race sounds or providing music, further immersing the user in their training environment.
The system facilitates data exchange between the wearable device and a smart device. For instance, avatar data is sent from the smart device to inform the user of GPS points and speed metrics. Conversely, user data, such as heart rate and movement statistics, can be transmitted back to the smart device for analysis and tracking.
The wearable augmented reality apparatus may come in monocular or binocular designs, each equipped with its own sensor systems and processing units. The optical output is adjusted based on user data to ensure that the avatar appears correctly positioned in relation to the user's movements, enhancing the overall training experience.
